Celluloid Dreams - 28 Weeks Later (ELN Article)

I’m a little late to the party, I know. We finally got a chance to see 28 Weeks Later tonight.

Wow. Despite the much larger cast of characters, it actually succeeds in being bleaker than the original 28 Days Later, and almost as bleak as Children of Men.

I’ve heard the differences between Days and Weeks compared to those between Ridley Scott’s Alien and John Cameron’s Aliens, and I’d say that’s pretty much spot on. Exchange the infected in 28 Weeks Later with xenomorphs, and you’ve got a ... Read more »

Celluloid Dreams - Beowulf (ELN Article)

Grendel's MotherThe interesting thing to me, every time I’ve been assigned Beowulf in school, was that we never read past Grendel’s death. That event so defined the life of the protagonist, that we ignore the rest of the story and focus solely on the glory. The rest of the poem is about what happens after the glory. When your best days are behind you, when the most important thing you will ever do has already been done.

Cloverfield Cloverfield. If you’re at all like me, you’ve been champing at the bit to find out what the hell this movie is since the first teaser trailer was attached to Transformers (I suppose something interesting had to be attached to it). Those first shots were stunning: the party, and the head of Lady Liberty crashing through the streets of Manhattan, shot by a digital handicam, grabbed me. We waited for a title, but there was none. Just the Bad Robot animation, a symbol that we, as Alias fans, ... Read more »

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton are kind of like Reese’s Cups. Two great tastes that go great together. Each of their previous outings have been phenomenal: Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Corpse Bride are all among my favorite films. Generally, if either of them does something, I’m there, but when they work together, I’m ecstatic.

So it should come as no surprise that I’ve been waiting for Sweeney Todd for a decade. Burton first signed on ... Read more »

Tim Burton Falls Down the Rabbit Hole. (ELN Article)

According to Variety, Tim Burton is set to direct a new Disney interpretation of Alice in Wonderland.

It will be a mix of live action and motion-capture CG, like Beowulf and Polar Express. I wonder if that means we’ll get to see Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter? Either way, this has the potential to be creepy and awfully cool. Marilyn Manson’s probably going to have a fit if he doesn’t get a part, maybe as the caterpillar?

Also mentioned (and possibly even more fun), after he wraps on Alice, ... Read more »
